Writerly Resources

Here are some of my favorite writing and publishing resources:

Author's Guild: A great resource for contract advice and other services for writers.

Backspace: Free writing-related articles on every conceivable topic, publishing tips, book reviews, discussion forums, and more.

Duotrope: In a short time, Duotrope has developed into a thriving community for fiction writers and poets. Search for markets, track your submissions, and find out who's getting their work accepted where. Contribute to help them keep going. And be careful. The site is addictive.

Kiva.org: Ok, Kiva has absolutely nothing to do with writing. Nada. But now that I've got your attention, check it out. Here's a way even impoverished writers can help turn around this ailing world. One of the great applications of technology to helping the world's poor, Kiva lets you loan up to $25 at a time to specific small business owners in developing countries for specific projects. 100% of your loan goes to the person in need, and when they pay it back (and they've got less than a 1% default rate), you can either withdraw your original amount or loan it to another small business owner in need.

Luna Park: An excellent new blog providing regular reviews of little and literary magazines.

NewPages.com: An excellent running review of current and past issues of major and minor lit mags.

Pub Rants: Agent Kristin Nelson's daily blog with a ton of useful information for authors seeking representation, including a line-by-line assessment of query letters she's been moved to act on.

Pushcart Rankings: Cliff Garstang's excellent annual ranking of how literary magazines stack up with regard to recent Pushcart Prizes and nominations for fiction.

Squaw Valley Community of Writers: One of the oldest writers' conferences in the country. A great place to hone your craft, meet other writers, and network with genuinely approachable agents and publishers.
